Chrysanthemum
By Awn Al-Bahisi
O chrysanthemum, secret of love,
O heartbeat that has settled in my soul and longing.
In you, beauty breathes its fragrance,
And spring pours upon the horizon, then kneels in prayer.
White as dawn when it rises
From among the clouds and rests upon the earth.
And red as longing when it comes to me,
So I see you in my eyes as a poem of love.
O flower among flowers, you stand apart,
Until even the face of dew grows shy before you.
I was never searching for a beauty to enchant me,
Until I saw you, and all I knew bowed before what I beheld.
In every petal of your fragrance lies a story,
Telling the tale of a lover whose love has never ended.
And in your smile are a thousand secrets
For which I found no language capable of explaining their fragrance.
O chrysanthemum, O woman,
You walk, and even the echo falls silent beneath your steps.
If beautiful love has a sign,
Then I have found that love in you, just as I see it.
I offer you my heart, not because you are a flower,
But because my heart, in loving you, has found its endless horizon.
And if you ask me, “Why are you the only one?”
I will say: “Because in my eyes, there is no one but you.”
O chrysanthemum, be my endless horizon,
The most beautiful thing that remains of all my days.
To you belong the poem and all poetry,
And whenever love speaks my name, I write that love for you.
